Spring is filled with endless inspiration. Crop Tops, Full skirts, High-waisted trousers, culottes, trench coats, utilitarian vests and jackets, fluid drape dresses, bohemian silhouettes, sheer fabrics, gingham, quilted pieces, cinched waists, lots of slouchy trends, ruffles and lace, shirt dresses and cape gowns.
Denim this season becomes pure luxury and aside from its rising versatility, the fabric gains a unique spectrum of fresh, new interpretations. Embellished, washed out, molded into feminine, ladylike silhouettes, or just relaxed and comfortable, there is no doubt that denim goes high fashion this season.
There are so many fabulous designers to list, but here are some of my favorite designers whose shows I attended during Fashion week and I am eagerly awaiting their arrival in stores.
BCBG by Max Azria, whose line is stunning with lots of drape dresses, abstract floral prints, and bohemian silhouettes. Classic, enduring fabrications were modernized and softened for comfortable chic. Beautiful pastel colors, lending a sun-bleached softness to this collection… Always a favorite for me.
Marissa Webb,(creative director for Banana Republic) presented a mix of flowy-feminine mini-dresses with such a romantic aura and try topping this with a cargo vest, cool shirt dresses and great revamps of the classic trench is ultra-soft fabrics.
Carmen Marc Valvo modern and clean, plunging necklines, playful pantsuits and sheer over-skirts. Valvo knows how to flatter a woman’s figure…
Nicole Miller plays with a lot of dainty ruffles and delicate frills sewing them onto hems of skinny skirts and dresses for both daytime and evening looks. Stretchy body con dresses and plenty of enticing tropical and floral prints.
Zimmerman by Nicky Zimmerman, a new line for me and absolutely gorgeous. Her collection is light and airy, lacy, layered slip dresses, wide-legged trousers with sexy off the shoulder men’s shirting, skirts with extended layers of ruffles, cinched-trench vests, and amazing swimwear to nice to swim in!
Mara Hoffman is coming out with a softer direction this season pairing natural fabrics and a muted color palette. Featuring rainbow slip dresses, cutouts, sunbursts and striped motif on swimwear, slacks, maxi dresses and Relaxed Woven shirt and trouser sets that will be incredibly sophisticated and polished.
A few more key trends you’ll see… Sporty Chic including slouchy knitted polo-buttoned up shirts that are not just for country clubs but very versatile and J.Crew and Hugo Boss have nailed this trend.
Khaki tones. Popping up everywhere this season, khaki is the shade expected to add some much needed freshness to the upcoming spring season. From military, to modern safari, expect khaki to find its way into your wardrobe come spring.
Feminine Lace. If its Spring time, it’s lace time! Heavenly it is and white, sublime and playing the ultra-unique card with cutouts, ruffles and flowy renderings that will take center stage with dresses, skirts and tops this season.
Flare pants making a comeback from the 70’s… You will see these retro versions in prints and dipped in vivid colors, and also in denim jeans.
There are so many great styles to choose from, an avalanche of options, something for everyone this season, and these trends can be very easy to wear. Make each look your own, be unique, play up your favorite body parts, know your best colors and wear them well. It’s all about you, how you work it and how you own it.
Happy Spring! Christie Maruka
